This small fish tank still sits in the basement of Tito’s villa in Igalo, Montenegro. The building itself is now abandoned and deteriorating, but tourists are allowed to roam its many hallways and rooms—for a fee, of course.
Some decades ago, when the country was still called Yugoslavia and the villa was still in use by comrade Tito and other politicians, the fish tank contained a species imported from east Asia, a fish known to be extremely sensitive to pollution. If the fish were to die, it would sink and fall onto a sensor, activate an alarm, and alert staff to shut off the building’s water supply.
As an added precaution, one staff member sat there all day staring at the fish. That was one guy’s job: to sit and stare at a fish all day.
